A different kind of pre-Christmas message
This has been a hard year for many people, and it is likely that 2026 will ask a lot of us too. We are all getting older, the world feels uncertain, and it is easy to carry a quiet worry about our health, our families and the future. If you feel tired, stretched or anxious right now, you are not alone.
In the middle of Christmas, New Year and all the noise about "fixing" ourselves, what most of us really need is a little more peace in our own hearts and a sense of steadiness in our bodies. That is why, instead of starting the year with a long list of resolutions, I would love you to try something much simpler: to choose just one thing to protect. My hope is that, in whatever way makes sense for you, that one thing will include your health, because without it very little else truly matters.
Choose one thing to protect
Instead of adding more pressure in January, I invite you to choose just one thing to protect in the months ahead - something that genuinely supports your health and peace of mind. It might be sleep, a daily walk, a weekly swim, a quiet morning with a book, or dinner with someone who really sees you. Put it in your calendar and treat it as a non-negotiable meeting with your future self.
You might also like to set a gentle "holiday baseline" for yourself: how much you want to spend, how many social events feel right for you, and what food and drink choices truly feel "worth it". Let that baseline be your anchor, rather than guilt or fear of missing out (FOMO).
Give your nervous system a softer season
Our nervous systems work hard at this time of year. Crowded calendars, rich food, irregular sleep and big emotions can all add up. Simple anchors can make a real difference: a short walk after meals, ten slow breaths in the bathroom before you go back to the table, a quiet cup of tea before bed, or sending a quick message to someone who feels safe when life feels like "a lot". Small, repeatable things are often more powerful than big gestures.
Think "lighter, sooner, smaller" for 2026
As you look toward 2026, remember that health changes do not need to be dramatic or perfect. They work best when they are lighter, sooner and smaller: one extra glass of water, one more balanced breakfast, one evening a week without screens in bed. Your biology does not wait for 1 January. Every small act of care you take now already belongs to the "new year".
Let joy count as part of your health
Joy is not separate from health. Laughter, connection, music, time in nature, playing with children or pets, and meaningful conversations all help support the nervous system and everyday wellbeing. They are not extras. They are part of the work.
If this season feels tender
Finally, if this season feels tender for you for any reason, I want to acknowledge that too. You do not have to fix it or "stay positive". It is enough to honour how you feel, move gently, and build yourself a softer landing with a little more rest and a few fewer obligations where you can.
